COVID-19 Update for First Student Springfield Big Bus & SPED

As far as the Union has been told health insurance will continue at this time for all that use it.  As there are no paychecks, drivers deductions are not being collected.  Once you go back to work and or begin receiving checks you will be required to payback, overtime, the missed payments.

COVID-19 Update for First Student Big Bus and SPED

We received word that at this time Springfield has refused to continue making payments to First Student during this shutdown. This means First Student is still not in a position to pay drivers. Local 1459 has sent letters to the Mayor, Superintendent, and School Committee in an attempt to convince them to do the right thing and pay the already budgeted money to First Student so the drivers can get paid. We will keep you all updated. In the meantime file unemployment claims immediately if you havent already done so.

Anyone using medical insurance from First Student will continue to have coverage while schools are closed.  When schools reopen the medical payments will resume and will be collected  until payments are made up.

COVID-19 Update for First Student Springfield Big Bus

First Student Regular Needs Transportation:  The Union has been in touch with the Employer daily.  We, along with First Student, are encouraging all to sign up for unemployment as we await further information.  At this time First Student is meeting and asking the School Department to continue to fund the transportation bills for at least the next three weeks while the shutdown is upon us.  Our goal, of course, is to see the funds continue to flow to First Student and in turn to the drivers in the hopes to get drivers paid during the three week shutdown.  Should this happen drivers could of course cancel or payback any unemployment claim.  Once we know more we will update you all.

First Student Mechanics: At this time First Student maintains that mechanics are to report to work and be compensated.
