2016 Stewards' Seminar a Success

On Tuesday, May 3rd over 170 stewards, members, staff, and guests attended this year's Steward Seminar for a day of education, training, and making connections across the labor movement.  President Dan Clifford, Secretary-Treasurer Tyrone Housey, and Organizing Director Matt Szulborski spoke about the recent contract victory at Stop & Shop and the work of the local.  Stewards also heard from Barbara Madeloni, President of the Massachusetts Teachers Association about the upcoming ballot initiative that attacks public schools as well as Al Norman from Sprawlbusters about the ways Walmart lowers our quality of life.  Workshop presenters included labor lawyer David Rome, Kevin Casey of the Mass. AFL-CIO, lawyer Charlie Casartello, Mark Mead of the national pension fund, federal mediator John Carpino, Ellen Schwartz of the Vermont Workers' Center, and Aaron Brenner from the UFCW Capital Stewardship department.  In the afternoon UFCW Region 1 Director Tom Clarke and Mass. AFL-CIO president Steve Tolman spoke followed by a call for solidarity from union members at IBEW Local 2324 in their strike and fight with Verizon.
