Springfield DPW Workers Join Local 1459!
This past Thursday, July 24, 2008, roughly 150 Department of Public Works for the city of Springfield, Massachusetts voted overwhelmingly to merge their association with UFCW Local 1459. Covering all non-supervisory positions, our newest members collect trash, recycling, yard waste, bulk pickup, fix roads, storm drains, catch basins, sweep city streets, maintain city parks, plant and maintain trees and flowers, amongst other duties.
During the organizing drive, Local 1459 learned of many issues confronting DPW workers. Outsourcing work is a major concern. Years ago, Springfield DPW employed over 300 fulltime workers. That number has been reduced by more than half as each succeeding city administration attempts to deal with escalating costs and greatly reduced funding. The attrition at DPW is of great concern to Local 1459 however, as various private companies, most of which offer lower wages and few if any benefits, and Sheriff’s Department prisoners, most of whom are performing community service, are eroding the fragile standard of living of DPW employees.
Local 1459 organizers were greeted to loud horns, friendly waves, and many “thumbs up” displays of support on election day. Several of our DPW organizing committee members arrived at 5:30am to hold signs and pass out literature to their coworkers on the day of the vote. Although other unions were also interested in representing Springfield DPW workers, the workers felt strongly that UFCW Local 1459 was the best fit. Vice President Brown and Organizers Ross Kiely and Tyrone Housey worked on this organizing campaign. Currently representing many municipal bargaining units in the greater Springfield area, Local 1459 is proud to represent DPW workers not only in Springfield, but Chicopee and Palmer as well. To our newest members, a hearty Welcome!
